Mysterious Rock Hospital under the Castle The unique calcereous tuff caves of Castle Hill were created as an effect of the hot water sprigs at the dawn of the history of the Earth. These caves then served as refuge as well as hunting ground for the prehistoric man (the “Hunter of Buda) appearing half a million years ago. This place is called Labyrinth of Buda Castle.

Geographically, Hungary is landlocked; the strategic location astride main land routes between Western Europe and Balkan Peninsula as well as between Ukraine and Mediterranean basin; the north-south flowing Duna (Danube) and Tisza Rivers divide the country into three large regions.

Budapest is the only capital city in the world where there are more than one hundred hot thermal springs. Some 125 springs produce 70 million litres of thermal water a day, with temperatures ranging up to 58 Celsius. Some of these waters have medicinal effects due to their medically valuable mineral contents.

There is a remarkable cave system, formed by the thermal waters, under some of the hills in Buda. The most extensive one is right underneath the Castle Hill. These have been used for hundreds of years, and they proved especially useful during wars and invasions. Not many people know there is a Rock Hospital located under the Castle Hill. It was unknown (even for the local citizens), and nobody knew where the iron gate was leading from the walls of the castle.

Fascinating new thing for me. I loved reading the post and was able to learn a few things. I didn't know that Budapest is the only capital city in the world with thermal springs. I thought Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland also has them.

Dear Christian,
Thank you for your highlighting about Budapest being the only capital city in the world.

The thing is, Budapest is the only capital city in the world where there are more than one hundred hot thermal springs. There are no other cities of comparable size anywhere where visitors can explore stalactite caves in the middle of the residential districts.

Wherever there are underground geysers there are stories surrounding them of having medicinal properties. And that is not entirely false.

It has been found that those hot water springs and geysers have high sulfate content and can cure a myriad of skin diseases.

It’s indeed known for the contents in the thermal springs waters :) If you have a chance will you come here with your family for a visit?:)

The picture of the hospital looks pretty sophisticated to me. Is this privately funded or run by the government? Looks neat and clean and quite modern as well. I hope a lot of people are benefiting from this.

Hi Shamshed,

Some local businessmen started the project right before the second World War in order to create a safe storage for their goods. To reduce the cost, they used the caves inside the hill. The ongoing project was then taken over by the Government of Budapest. It established an emergency surgery center there by changing the original plans.

I have read a bit about tourism in Hungary and it seemed to me that it is one of the countries that is worth a visit at least once in life. Hungary is not an expensive country to visit like say Spain or Greece. Please write more about it.
