Budapest's ECO-friendliness: Critical Mass & Car FREE day on 22 September

Besides being the car free day in Budapest, it will also be the CRITICAL MASS. Even though this event has already hit the highest world record of 80,000 bicyclists on EARTH DAY 2008, Critical Mass Budapest is again organising its traditional bicycle demonstration to raise awareness and bring the public’s attention to the mass demand for better conditions represented by bicyclists. It is targeting at those who choose this environmentally friendly form of transport as an alternative to motor vehicles.

This mass demonstration aimed at bringing the public’s attention to the crisis caused by motor vehicles, e.g. traffic jams and environmental pollution. It promotes the bicycle as a healthy, fast, cheap and environmentally friendly alternative mode of transport. With aims to encourage the local population to use their bicycles for transportation whenever possible, and not just for recreation or
sports. It has an influential impact on decision makers and city planners toward creating more bicycle paths, designing better and safer bicycle lanes, and providing facilities for bicycle storage and transport.

Environment wise, with better city planning, critical mass eventually hope that there shall be reduced smog and traffic, thereby improving the quality of life in the city. While offering an opportunity for cyclists to make a statement, socialise, and celebrate cycling, Critical Mass is non-confrontational toward motorists and attempts to minimise the level of inconvenience the rides cause for all those who are not involved: pedestrians, public transportation, and individual drivers.

I feel most major cities should promote the use of all the various types of eco-friendly alternatives. Don’t you agree that it would be a great way to make our environment a better place to live in?

The whole idea of raising awareness and bringing the public’s attention to the mass demand for better conditions is rightly represented by these bicyclists. I love bikes and I think they are healthy and cheap. These days battery powered bikes are also available so that people can cover longer distances.

Yes, a lot of Hungarians love cycling too. Usually in the weekends there is a special lane on the road near the Margit bridge that is closed just for cyclists :) Sometimes you can see roller bladers also ;)

But its true, bicycles need to be used whenever possible instead of cars or motorcycles. These days’ people are becoming more and more environment sensitive, that’s why the eco-friendly gadgets and cars are booming. Currently most of the products are a tad expensive, but give it a couple of years and even this problem will be taken care of!

About the timing, it’s really a question of education to the public also...if only it is a school of thought that is embrace by everyone (in the world) then on the bigger picture, will the pollution issues be resolved. For me, I am willing to fight for FRESH AIR!

All eco-friendly alternatives are the need of the hour. Great to see such mass-mobilisation which reflects high levels of awareness in the society as well!
Zsolt, thanks for putting up this post.

Mass-mobilisation is the fantastic side about the ’critical mass’ indeed! You’re right and you certainly have a sharp eye for this :)

They are like ’transformers’, when you mobilised the team members virtually for the mission (in this case, on these two special days for now), they achieved their goals together, cohesively. At other times, they are everywhere in the city ;) watching and creating public awareness gently...for example wearing the T-shirts bearing the icon/logo, choosing to use the public transport instead of the car etc...in small steps like this :) or even having a sticker of the logo at possible spots near them (office’s desk etc)

Hey I love this idea of car free day. Wish we can have something like that in India too.

Why don’t you suggest a volunteer group to push the idea through? It will make India a better place! Most importantly, it’s a HEALTHY venture. Those taking the first steps to critical mass in India can MAKE NEWS TOO ;)
